Cognitive Neuroscience: The intersection of cognitve science, brain imaging, and clinical neuroscience.

Research Collaboration

The Science Task Group has established a number of research themes so far.

These are:

  • Attention
  • Perception & Action
  • Memory & Learning
  • Language & Hearing
  • Emotion
  • Social Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Rehabilitation

The Research Theme Task Groups provide the main working science groups in the WICN, representing research collaboration and determining future research strategy from the science base upwards. Each group contains those members working in the theme area (post-doctoral fellows through all levels of academic seniority) from the three WICN Universities.

In addition to drawing together the activities of existing researchers, key developments include the appointment of five new Chairs in strategically important new domains of Cognitive Neuroscience, such as Language Development, Computational Neuroscience, Emotion, Social Cognitive Neuroscience and Cognitive Rehabilitation. These professorial appointments are supported by a number of post-doctoral resident and visiting fellowships and research assistants.

Through the WICN collaboration, research teams also have at their fingertips the state-of-the-art technology that is fundamental to Cognitive Neuroscience. For example, there are established laboratories and substantial experience with event-related potentials (ERP) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) techniques, a growing expertise with virtual reality (VR) systems, magnetoencephalography (MEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and access to advanced clinical, computational and VR systems including the IBM supercomputer Blue C, which will allow unparalleled real-time analysis and visualisation.
